Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act Essentials: Avoiding Common Pitfalls
Most healthcare professionals understand the intent of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), ensuring emergency care regardless of ability to pay. But understanding the spirit of the law isn't enough. EMTALA violations frequently occur in situations that have nothing to do with turning away indigent patients, catching well-intentioned clinicians, risk managers, and hospital leaders off guard.
Because EMTALA intersects with clinical judgment, hospital operations, and regulatory oversight, compliance can be complex. Violations can result from seemingly routine clinical decisions, transfer arrangements, and hospital policies that appear perfectly reasonable from a medical standpoint but run afoul of regulatory requirements. In this one-hour session, drawing on real-world cases and insights from a medical director overseeing the Acentra EMTALA physician review team, you'll learn:
- The specific regulatory language that trips up hospitals, not just the general principles
- Common, high-risk clinical scenarios that unexpectedly lead to EMTALA violations
- The hidden landmines in patient transfers, on-call coverage, and specialty consultations
- How to structure policies and documentation to withstand regulatory scrutiny
- Practical strategies to protect your institution from citations while maintaining excellent patient care
Who Should Attend: Emergency physicians, hospitalists, risk management professionals, compliance officers, hospital administrators, and clinical leaders responsible for EMTALA compliance.
